Leadership Exchange - Spring/Summer 2018 - 9

ALA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, NATIONAL HARBOR, MD

heart sank. No way would I be getting an autographed
copy. Keeping my eye on that goal, however, I pleaded
with a colleague who must have sprinted to get her
position near the front of the line (again, clear goal with
appropriate action taken) to get me a copy. She agreed.
I moved on to the next meeting on my schedule. After
that meeting ended, to my surprise, Ms. Armour was
still signing books and taking pictures with the last two
customers in line to purchase her book. True to form,
she was talking and engaging with these two people
with the same enthusiasm and energy with which she
had addressed the crowd. In that moment, Ms. Armour
drove home what "walking the walk" is - she was
prepared with enough books and with enough time to
treat everyone with the same attention. This is a lesson
that cannot be learned from reading a book, watching a
video, or talking with someone. This lesson could only

be learned through observing a great leader and speaker
in action: even when the lights and cameras were off, even
when there are only a few people watching, Ms. Armour's
goal to inspire and motivate was clear.
Ms. Armour's message was easier for us to understand
after the first keynote by John Quiñones the day before.
Mr. Quiñones laid the foundation with the message that
no matter how advanced we become, it all comes down
to doing the right thing. He believed there is a desperate
need for active bystanders, and asked us to consider how
we respond when we witness injustice. Do we step in or do
we step away? Mr. Quiñones made it his life's work to give
a voice to people who have no voice and are invisible. His
presentation skillfully wove contrasting threads of wisdom
together: his definition of the ultimate tragedy is the silence
of good people; bullies hide in anonymity, and we build
higher walls rather than stronger bridges. And one of his
last "isms": our lives begin to end when we are silent about
things that matter.
Mr. Quiñones suggested that true happiness comes down to
the respect that we have for one another.

That message - respect for one another - was taken one
step further by Kari Knutson in her presentation about
emotional intelligence. She suggested that we show
everyone, including ourselves, respect, and stop blaming
