To make it sustainable within a profit organisation will be tough—I guess there always has to be a way of mapping this to shareholder success. So I’m thinking that if we get this started—and it’s a big if—then, probably in the right fashion and energised by the passion of the NI India employees, a separate non-profit organisation would probably be the way to go in order to make it sustainable. Tell me about your STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths] education initiative. That is something that will have long-term benefit from the shareholder point of view. And I think it is more of a mission in India, given that 400,000 engineers graduate every year but only a fraction of the engineers are employable because there’s big gap between what the market requires and what the institutions are delivering. That gap is due to the fact that most colleges teach theory and either cannot afford to or don’t know how to deliver experiential education. There’s a formal programme in NI India that envisions that every engineer that graduates is taught LabVIEW. We have Centres of Excellence that are basically labs with LabVIEW and some hardware. There are over 240 colleges in India that using our products. Most of them got products—hardware and software—heavily discounted. There are tools that help bridge the gap between theory and practice. And you know about the Reva project [with RV College of Engg]. Such projects provide the students with experience in how technology is being used in the real world. We have also partnered with the Indo US Collaboration for Engineering Education and that aims to train the trainer—the engineering faculty. I recently visited a two-week-long workshop in Mysore, which was attended by over 500 faculty members from across India. They were taught different specialties— leadership, remote education via Internet, advanced technologies in digital signal processing—that are required to become better professors. Part of the course was experiential education using our tools. They were only 500—a drop in the ocean of profs teaching around India. So among the objectives was that they would train to teach their colleagues and influence their universities to adopt better tools and methodologies for engineering education. What are your next milestones within NI’s corporate responsibility programme? Have you set yourselves any goals? We are hopefully moving in the direction of our vision. It would be presumptuous of me to say what the goals might be like AMD has—50 by 15, where 50 per cent of the world will be connected to the Internet by the year 2015. Let us not presume what can happen. Let us put the vision and see where it takes us. We have our grand vision, which is to make the world a better place, and we believe we can do that by helping scientists and engineers. So my audacious goal is that if there’s anybody who can benefit from our tools in improving the lot of human beings, especially here in India, they should have access to our technology. Does it worry you that without specific goals the grandest of plans can flounder? True. But our aim is to keep people passionate. Goals can sometimes be too blunt an instrument that can de-motivate if you are not close to getting the goal. So I’m letting the NI India team go for the big vision and hopefully the motivation will be intrinsic and we’ll have good results.
