Packet echo test with varying attenuation levels as described above is carried out. The value of attenuation at which the DUT fails to respond is noted for this particular orientation, at 0°. The DUT is then rotated through small angular steps, say 30° at a time, and the process is repeated. This process can then be repeated for vertical/horizontal orientation of the rubber duck antenna. Thus by varying the orientation of the DUT inside an anechoic chamber and conducting receiver tests, the radiation pattern performance of the designed antenna can be safely predicted. This provides a cheap and quick alternative to measuring antenna characteristics during prototype design stages. One of the bottlenecks that many product developers encounter in incorporating any radio communication IC is facing the legal aspect of qualifying the products and going to market without encountering legal problems. Manufacture and sale of wireless products intended for unlicensed operation in the 2.4GHz ISM band are governed by regulatory bodies in various countries. These products must at the very least pass the following tests: spurious radiation emissions, spurious conducted emissions, power line conducted emissions, output power, occupied bandwidth, band edge compliance and power spectral density. Output power—The RF development platform can issue commands to put the DUT in unmodulated carrier continuous transmit mode. Power amplification levels—The platform can issue commands to step between the radio’s output power levels covering the entire dynamic range. Occupied bandwidth—The RF development platform can issue commands to put the DUT in modulated carrier continuous transmit mode. The 6dB markers on either side of the peak measurement should give the occupied bandwidth spec. Spurious emissions—The RF platform would particularly come handy for measuring harmonic and non-harmonic spurs. Platform enables changing amplification levels on the fly and thereby facilitates measuring spurs at different PA amplification levels. Impedance measurement—The test platform can be used to put the DUT in transmit or receive modes thereby enabling impedance measurement on the network analyser. PN sequence—In case of spread spectrum radio systems, platform can provide means to change the PN code sequence. Channels—More so for precompliance testing, it is often a norm to test the radio on the first, last and central channels. Hence the ability to switch channels on the fly without having to change the firmware on the device proves beneficial. We expect to see a host of new devices in the new networks Mobile WiMAX enables IP convergence continued from page 12 ICQMOIT-2008 Oct. 24-25 IBS, Dontanapalli, Hyderabad In the R6 interface between BS and ASN gateway, all control and bearer plane protocols are involved. The control plane consists of QoS, security and mobility. The bearer plane represents the intra-ASN data path between the BA and ASN GW. IP convergence With all the benefits that IP convergence offers, there is a penalty that ASN has to address. The payload of the voice and the video packets transmitted from the MS to the BS are of small sizes, sometimes as small as 20 bytes, due to the compression techniques used at the application level. However, when they are transmitted as IP packets, there is an addition of IP and higher-layer protocol header. The header size at minimum is 20 bytes, which means that 50 per cent of the bandwidth is used for transmitting header information when transmitting a payload as low as 20 bytes. In a typical scenario, the channel between the mobile station to base station is wireless. Bit error rates are high and bandwidth is a scarce resource. In such a situation, we need to look for a solution that would reduce the bandwidth usage for header transmission and, at the same time, keep the bit error rates minimum.
