Monthly newsletter for India’s electronics engineers August 1-15, 2008 Eclipse spurs embedded software dev’t By Robert Day VP Marketing at LynuxWorks Add-In Provider Representative Board of Directors Eclipse Foundation to plug-in their own tools using a standard mechanism and offers a standard user interface. How the tool works and what the tool does may well vary from processor to processor or RTOS to RTOS, but the The Eclipse framework has become the de facto standard for embedded software vendors to base their tools on, and as a result, it is being adopted across the world by embedded software developers as their IDE. Before looking at what the implications are of this trend for the Indian embedded market, it is worth spending a little time describing what Eclipse is so that the ramifications for India can be better understood. Eclipse is not an embedded environment, but it is a platform born from the enterprise development world that allows companies Day: The use of open standards such as Eclipse in embedded systems development levels the playing field and allows companies to start communicating and supporting each other better. IDE stays the same, and the general look and feel will be very similar. This has major benefits for both embedded vendors and users alike. Vendors no longer have to utilise valuable engineering resources in developing and maintaining IDE technology that is not specific to the embedded domain. They can also take advantage of third-party plug-ins to allow their users to build a best-in-class software development environment tailored to their specific needs. These can be either embedded or enterprise, and available with commercial or open-source licenses. Embedded developers now have a common user interface from which to launch their embedded tools. The look and feel of the IDE will not change, regardless of the tools. If they are a little careful with choice of tool vendors, they should be able to use a wide selection of tools and RTOS without compromise. Well-managed framework The Eclipse framework is managed by the Eclipse Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, and the Eclipse foundation member companies. These member companies contribute both developers and code to the Eclipse framework, with a number of projects that plug-in to the Eclipse framework giving examples of particular tools that embedded vendors can use or modify accordingly. Although Eclipse is not specific to embedded development, a large number of the Eclipse members are from the embedded community, and that helps drive key features in both the framework and the projects continued on page Learn about enhanced video encoding By Pankaj K. Inside News 3 EoP enables HD video delivery In video compression, motion compensation is a technique for describing a picture in terms of translated copies of macroblocks. This approach removes the redundancy between successive frames and thus improves compression efficiency. A simple macroblock replacement scheme works only in the areas of the picture where a macroblock in the present frame and past frame are similar. But most often, the macroblocks in the new frame and previous frame are not similar. However, the information contained in the new frame’s macroblock is available in the previous frame, though it has moved. For example, consider a moving car across the screen. Even though the object has moved from one frame to the other, much of the data required for the latest frame is still available in the in the previous frame, although not in the same place. Motion compensation tries to achieve greater compression by reusing portions from the previous frame to construct the new frame, even if they have moved. In video coding, the reference frame is subtracted from a given frame. The difference is then called the residual and usually contains continued on page 10 Events 4 EDA Tech Forum Conference on Evolving Face of Data Management, Security & Storage REMES 2008 In Focus 7 Digital video surveillance adds intelligence to nets Sponsors 2 5 6 8 9 DigiKey Microchip National Instruments National Semiconductor Texas Instruments www.eetindia.com http://www.eetindia.co.in/SEARCH/SUMMARY/technical-articles/RTOS.HTM?ClickFromNewsletter_080801 http://www.eetindia.co.in/SEARCH/SUMMARY/technical-articles/Eclipse.HTM?ClickFromNewsletter_080801 http://www.eetindia.co.in/SEARCH/SUMMARY/industry-news/IDE.HTM?ClickFromNewsletter_080801 http://www.eetindia.co.in/SEARCH/SUMMARY/technical-articles/motioncompensation.HTM http://www.eetindia.co.in/SEARCH/SUMMARY/technical-articles/motioncompensation.HTM http://www.globalsources.com http://www.globalsources.com http://www.eetindia.com
