BY CHRISTINA GREEN 68 boutiquedesign.com JULY + AUGUST 2015 THE OCEAN CAN OFFER a flood of inspiration for designers, but few get as immersed in that muse as Poole Associates' Ed Poole did in revamping the interiors of Subsix, an underwater nightclub at the PER AQUUM resort in the Maldives. Poole brought the drama of the deep into the five-year-old space, located nearly 20 ft. below the waterline of an island lagoon, by suspending Italian-crafted Flashwhite pendants resembling sea urchins from the ceiling. Thousands of strands of capiz create a rolling wave effect. Mounted above those strings of shells are wavy lines of RGB LED ribbon lights, which Poole says add versatility to the 1,940-sq.-ft. space by bathing it in vibrant hues that can be adjusted to reflect an event's mood or the time of day. Harry Bertoia-designed chairs and bar stools-which the firm modified with EDPM sponge cord as another reference to sea urchins-further play up the venue's aquatic surroundings.
