Get Connected - Fall 2007 - (Page 1) The ENA Network Community Journal Fall 2007 Students Are Social Networking’s Visionaries, Early Adopters and Now Near-Total Adopters New Study by National School Boards Association Offers Insight Into Students’ Use of Social Networking In a new study released in August exploring the online behaviors of U.S. teens and “‘tweens,” the National School Boards Association found that 96 percent of nine- to 17-year-old students with online access use social networking technologies such as chatting, text messaging, blogging, downloading music, creating and sharing video, photographs and art, and of course visiting online communities such as Facebook, MySpace and Webkinz. What’s more, students spend almost as much time using Web sites and social networking services as they do watching television. For teens, that amounts to about nine hours a week online, compared to about 10 dedicated to watching television. Kids discuss education and homework online! While this news may not come as a surprise to many educators and parents, the study—called Creating & Connecting: Research and Guidelines on Online Social and Educational Networking and conducted by independent research and consulting firm Grunwald Associates LLC—uncovered some findings that might. For instance, nearly 60 percent of online students report discussing education-related topics such as college or college planning, learning outside of school, and careers. And 50 percent of online students say they talk specifically about schoolwork. “I must say that I was not surprised with the social networking adoption rate of kids.” says Dr. Tammy Grissom, executive director of the Tennessee School Boards Association. “However, I was very surprised that so many students are talking about schoolwork, but as a parent of two children, I’m very pleased too.” Continued on page 10 Learn all about ENA’s new E-mail Archiving solution, page 8
