Get Connected - Fall 2007 - (Page 13) Two Technology-Enabled Education Authorities to Speak at HECC Conference The 2007 HECC State Conference is just around the corner (November 29-30). This year we have two very special speakers who will be addressing the conference. The keynote speaker is Darren Atkinson. Darren Atkinson is principal consultant with Edunova. As a qualified teacher in the United Kingdom, he has worked in secondary education for 15 years, leading cross-discipline teams predominantly in inner-city regions of London. He joined Edunova in 2004, where his focus has been pioneering groundbreaking approaches to the building of curriculum frameworks, networked learning systems and new designs in school structures, as well as implementing innovative applications of technology to enhance learner experiences. The majority of his work is focused on the Building Schools for the Future program, and as a result, Darren has extensive experience working in partnership with schools, local authorities and the private sector to develop approaches to transformation, create operational solutions in response to vision statements and translate these into built environments, ICT solutions and organizational models. Darren is passionate about learning and is committed to the evolution of learning at a systemic level for the benefit of all. In his presentation at the HECC conference, Mr. Atkinson will be sharing the learning highlights from series a of pilot studies in the United Kingdom that have revealed how a PlayStation Portable (PSP) can be transformed into a valuable teacher and student tool in the classroom. Conducted across a number of different secondary and primary schools in the UK, early reflections on the pilot suggest the PSP can play a significant role in enabling teachers to personalize learning for students. Our other speaker is David Thornburg. He will be conducting a full-day workshop on Open Source software for education. As the founder and director of global operations for the Thornburg Center, and as senior fellow of the Congressional Institute for the Future, he conducts research and provides staff development in the areas of educational futures, multimedia, communications and whole-mind education throughout the Americas. He helps clients to think intelligently about the future and is active in exploring ways that telecommunications and multimedia will change the face of learning, both at home and in the classroom. His educational philosophy is based on the idea that students learn best when they are constructors of their own knowledge. He also believes that students who are taught in ways that honor their learning styles and dominant intelligences retain the native engagement with learning with which they entered school. A central theme of his work is that we must prepare students for their future, not for our past. 13
