Get Connected - Fall 2007 - (Page 6) The Partnership for 21st Century Skills: A New Catalyst for Change If there is one thing that characterizes the new millennium, it would have to be that everything is changing! • Education is changing • Competition, especially global competition, is changing • The workplace, jobs and skill demands are changing • The economy is changing Intel, Cable in the Classroom and your very own ENA are just some of the organizations that make up the membership. All of the members are committed to advancing 21st century skills by encouraging schools, districts and states to advocate for the infusion of 21st century skills into education and providing tools and resources to help facilitate and drive change. Everyone’s talking about 21st century schools and the importance of preparing students for the 21st century to meet the needs of a changing world. But what does that really mean and how do I effect 21st century teaching and learning? Meet The Partnership for 21st Skills (the Partnership). The Partnership is a national initiative and association dedicated to bringing 21st century skills to the forefront in education, and it is gaining strong support and momentum across the country. Even more importantly, the work they are doing is available to you to use locally. What Are 21st Century Skills and Why Are They So Critical? Twenty-first century student outcomes combine the skills knowledge, and expertise students should master to succeed in work and life in the 21st century. A brief description is outlined below, but you can learn more on the Partnership Web site (www.21stcenturyskills.org). • Core Subjects and 21st Century Themes – Who is The Partnership for 21st Century Skills? The Partnership was started in 2002. It is the leading advocacy organization focused on infusing 21st century skills into education. The partnership is made up of over 35 organizations that bring together the business community, education leaders and policymakers to define a powerful vision for 21st century education to ensure every child’s success as citizens and workers in the 21st century. The National Education Association (NEA), American Association of School Librarians (AASL), Apple, Dell, In addition to teaching the traditional core subjects, themes such as global awareness, financial and economic literacy, civic literacy and health literacy should be woven into the core subjects. • Learning and Innovation Skills – Skills such as creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration. • Information, Media and Technology Skills – Skills such as information literacy, media literacy and information, technology and communication (ICT) literacy. • Life and Career Skills – Skills such as flexibility and adaptability, initiative and self-direction, social and cross-cultural skills, productivity and accountability, and leadership and responsibility. 6 http://www.21stcenturyskills.org
