Get Connected - February 2008 - (Page 1) The ENA Network Community Journal February 2008 Announcing CoSN’s Newest Initiatives: Empowering Small School Districts and Superintendents As the leading voice for K-12 education leaders who use technology strategically to improve teaching and learning, the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) provides products and services to support leadership development, advocacy, coalition building and awareness of emerging technologies. Two of CoSN’s latest initiatives will be of particular interest to Get Connected readers: the Small School District Initiative and Empowering the 21st Century Superintendent. CoSN’s Small District Initiative: Help for the Small and the Many resources small districts demand most, a CoSN focus group learned. This sharing is being accomplished in two key ways: first, through the discussion pages tied to each of the nine skill areas identified in CoSN’s monograph Framework of Essential Skills for CTOs, and secondly, through district case studies tied to each individual skill area. The discussions offer users a dynamic, rapid and precise information engine, while the case studies are a great opportunity for users to share their successes and learn by example. Introducing the Small District Technology Leadership Wiki According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), there are 14,220 school districts in the U.S., and nearly 75 percent have student populations under 2,500. Urban areas are characterized by a few large- and medium-sized districts, but the reality is that the vast majority of school districts in the United States serve small populations of students. Because of that, CoSN decided last year that it was time to develop, with the help of a grant from SRI International, a toolkit of resources tailored especially to the needs of technology directors (chief technology officers or CTOs in CoSN parlance) serving small school districts. That toolkit of resources has been launched in the form of a wiki. Just as education is always a work in progress and depends upon the contributions of many, CoSN decided that the wiki was the ideal format for providing targeted resources to small districts. The wiki is an ideal forum for sharing tips, strategies, best practices and stories of success—the kind of You can access the wiki by going to www.cosn.org/wiki/. You will find resources for each of the nine essential skills of the CTO, beginning with “Leadership and Vision” and going through “Communications Systems.” For each skill area, CoSN has provided a range of resources including articles, publications and Webcasts from CoSN, State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), TechAtlas and Continued on page 4 ENA Now Provides Gaggle E-mail Archiving Services, page 2 http://www.cosn.org/wiki/
