Energy Biz - March/April 2008 - (Page 8) » lETTERS for your comprehensive coverage of the Danish wind industry in the January/February issue of EnergyBiz. The next mission to Denmark is scheduled for the week of June 23–27. We hope some of your readers will join us to explore policy formulation, grid interconnection, manufacturing and R&D. More can be learned at www.newenergydenmark.org. Pernille Hager Hager Ernst Washington, D.C. thAnk you very much the world from Texas. That would be an accomplishment worth “braggin' about”! If only Africa could receive even a tenth of that power somehow. Anne B. Butterfield Columnist Boulder Daily Camera Boulder, Colo. The article, “Running Smarter – Upgrading Nuclear Operations” [January/February], states, “The real agent of change has been structural.” The overriding agent of change is more likely increased electric demand coupled with significantly higher fuel and environmental compliance costs. Nuclear generating units, which have low fuel costs, can be utilized to a maximum extent. A shift in the economic landscape has driven the structural management changes the article describes. Dan Moore Energy Services Group Alpharetta, Ga. While many politicians believe that they can amend or repeal the laws of physics and economics, they will ultimately discover that their powers are far more limited. Wind is fine as an energy displacement technology but not as a capacity displacement technology. Ed Reid President Fire to Ice Chapel Hill, N.C. You say that wind power works at one-third of capacity on the average, and Danish experts have advised Americans that large investments should be made in electric grids. As an American who spends a bit of time in Denmark and knows the energy scene in that country, I say those Danish experts should be pointedly ignored. Ferdinand E. Banks Professor of Economics University of Uppsala Uppsala Sweden “Running Smarter” was a good article regarding successful application of continuous improvement programs. But while nuclear is essential, the descriptions of the operational cost metrics are misleading. They are a rearview mirror look at the marginal cost of production of fully depreciated plants. The analysis excludes the real cost of disposal. Until the industry is able to implement a waste strategy, nuclear will remain suspect and problematic as a power resource. There is a profound need for increased dialogue between the public and private sectors regarding the development of a shared vision and an energy policy for our nation. We need to develop comprehensive energy plans at the state and national levels that are integrated with critical environmental and economic development policies.
