It is my life’s work. Over a period of 26 years, I have watched and helped automated metering evolve from being just an idea to being the dominant force in the metering industry today. Over these years, automated metering has progressed from being a technology used to accurately read meters to being a method to improve how utilities operate and to allow customers to also use that information to improve how they use the electricity, gas or water that is delivered to them. Automated metering includes any form of technology that remotely reads a meter. The reading devices could be as close to the meter as a few feet the Future Is Now THE PROMiSE OF TWO-WAy LiNKS By HOWARd SCOTT (Guest OpiniOn) or as far away as many miles. This includes automated meter reading (AMR), of which advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is a subset, prepayment metering and submetering. In the United States, prepayment metering is in use in only a few locations, though it is the preferred technology in many developing countries. Submetering use is growing rapidly and it will eventually be used to read tens of millions of consumer meters in North America and many times that number internationally. The big interest these days is in AMR and AMI. I continually remind our industry that we are going through a period of evolution that will not reach its conclusion for many more years.
