Energy Biz - September/October 2008 - (Page 8) » letters in response To your article “Think Small” [July/ August], I would take exception to the main premise of the article that the utilities are driving the push for distributed generation. As one of the companies listed in the article that supplies a microcogeneration appliance, Marathon Engine Systems has had little or no interest from contacted utilities. In fact, in the last three years, I can count on one hand the number of utilities that have shown the slightest interest about it. Of course I can’t speak for the other manufacturers with distributed generation products and perhaps it has something to do with our marketing, but it is my feeling that the only way utilities are going to embrace small-scale distributed generation would be through mandated legislation or rebate programs supported by tax dollars. If there are interested utilities in the U.S. or Canada, we are waiting for the phone call or e-mail. But I won’t hold my breath. I am concerned with the comparisons to wind power cost and contribution referenced in the article “Prices are Rising” [May/June]. The generation cost of wind reflects a two cents per kilowatt-hour federal production tax credit and other allowances that greatly reduce the wholesale price of the product. A fairer big picture comparison would include these costs.
