10 IDEAS are being developed, and some have already received funding. A sampling of the winning entries: CROWDSOURCE QUESTION: How might we improve the safety and security of all staff and students districtwide? OVERALL WINNING IDEA: Develop a K-12 comprehensive school counseling program (idea originator: counselor) Communicate accurate information in a timely manner to employees on urgent issues (idea originator: bus driver) How the Process Works Schools and disticts are using crowdsourcing as a way to gather information and input from large groups of people for everything from fundraising projects to algebra instruction techniques. California’s Poway Unified School District launched its own crowdsourcing site, InnovationU, to generate new ideas on improving safety and security in the district. SOURCE: Poway Unified School District Install video entry security technology to buildings outside school gates (idea originator: after-school-programs supervisor) Provide panic buttons for receptionists (idea originator: administrative assistant in district office) Eliminate room numbers on scheduling information on public areas of the district website (idea originator: website developer) Use magnetic-strip cards for entry to secure locations (idea originator: high school teacher) TOP LEVEL Once at this stage, the top ideas are presented to the superintendent for implementation. LEVEL 2 At this stage, district staff members with a range of expertise in different areas review each idea based on the potential for successful implementation, as well as the impact on the district. LEVEL 3 97 IDEAS were posted to the crowdsourcing forum, which was open to 4,000 employees ranging from bus drivers to district office staff and teachers. At the sophmore and junior levels an idea must generate user support, or a certain amount of interaction, made up of a combination of votes, posts and comments, and qualified page views. LEVEL 4 During the three-week challenge, any district employee can post ideas. As posts generate interest, the crowd members can collaborate, comment, and vote to move the idea forward.
