Featured products: Digital cameras, scanners, printers, workstations, desktops and accessories A simple solution It’s no secret that all levels of government face rising demands. Populations are growing; citizen expectations continue to climb; public safety threats are more complex. Technology, of course, is a critical ingredient in meeting these challenges. At the same time, several factors push agencies to demand more efficiency and flexibility from the technology they deploy. Taxpayers won’t write a blank check for technology purchases and ongoing maintenance. And growing environmental concerns prompt agencies to use fewer pieces of IT hardware and consume less energy. This issue of HP Government Solutions showcases a collection of public agencies that increased their technological capabilities—and trimmed cost and complexity from their IT infrastructure at the same time. Richmond, Va., built an enterprise planning process that carefully links technology to its overall business goal. Then the city standardized on HP Blade Servers to improve performance and simplify support. At the federal level, a shift from custom-designed hardware to industry-standard HP servers is projected to save more than $1 billion over the 20-year service life of JSTARS (Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System). This sophisticated airborne surveillance system also relies on HP’s OpenVMS operating system to deliver the stability and security needed for military operations. And in Sacramento County, Calif., powerful HP Integrity servers equipped with the HP Virtual Server Environment drastically reduced the amount of hardware needed to run the county’s ERP system. Now two Integrity servers power the ERP system, which formerly required 30 servers to operate. Initiatives such as these don’t just reduce IT hardware cost and complexity. They cut the amount of power needed to operate and cool government data centers—which can consume as much as 20 percent to 30 percent of IT budgets. As you’ll see on the following pages, HP works with government customers to deliver solutions that provide new capabilities while simplifying IT infrastructure. And we’ve developed a multi-pronged environmental program to help you reduce power consumption and reduce e-waste. Government agencies face a growing set of challenges. We believe the solution isn’t simply more technology—it’s more effective and efficient technology. 34 Foundation of support Bartholomew County, Ind., Information Services Department boosts productivity for county staff.
