GTC East 2008 brochure - (Page 12) Wednesday, September 24 Solution Showcase Steal This Idea 10:15 am – 11:30 am Information Technology is a daunting challenge in the best of times, and it is even more difficult today as governments face tightening finances and diminishing revenues. Under such circumstances, the smart thing to do is look for opportunities to borrow ideas from other jurisdictions who have demonstrated savings of time and money in solving major service delivery challenges. But where to look? There are 94,71 city, county and state governments across our nation. This fascinating session provides – at a pace not unlike a -day tour of Europe – the best of hundreds of nominees and dozens of winners from the Center for Digital Government’s intensive national surveys of best and emerging practices in the public sector IT community. Be prepared to borrow an idea… or 10. Speaker: Center for Digital Government Dealing with all that Data 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm Information management, data warehousing, and business intelligence techniques can be used in state government to achieve greater efficiencies, reduce fraud and abuse of government programs, and increase the quality of services to citizens. Citizens and political leaders demand greater data sharing and collaboration across agency boundaries to deliver related services, and meet common goals resulting in greater benefits for citizens and a more efficient government. This session will explore how the fundamentals of information management, data warehousing, and business intelligence can be used by government agencies to achieve this. Examples from successful projects will be examined with specific focus on a statewide public health data warehouse that bridged organization boundaries to provide a longitudinal view of citizen health. Speaker: Glenn Drayer, Practice Principal, Hewlett-Packard Virtualization – Beyond the Hype 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm Virtualization is an often used and somewhat misunderstood term. However, despite the current hype and misunderstanding, virtualization offers real advantages, helping governments create an IT infrastructure with the intelligence to react to problems in real time, repurposing servers on demand for situations as disaster recovery, added load, or simply to balance the use of existing resources. This session will offer a working definition of virtualization. It will also give concrete examples of how virtualization can be a cornerstone for a strategy to simplify information technology infrastructure and help make computing platforms more efficient. The presentation will cover the basic elements available today that can help simplify IT infrastructure, and provide a glimpse at technologies on the horizon. Speaker: Richard Radin, Enterprise Technologist, Dell Corporation General Session new York 2028: looking Forward, looking Back A Special 20th Anniversary Look at the Next 20 Years 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm In 1988 the top pop song was Faith by George Michaels; Roger Rabbit had just burst onto the scene, with its unlikely costars of an animated rabbit and basketball legend Michael Jordon. Microsoft and Apple Computer squared off against each other in a copyright infringement suit. The Tandy 1000, with its .5 inch floppy for storage, set you back $1400; the first T-1 backbone was added to the ARPANET (the granddaddy of the Internet). Today kids wander high school halls with cell phones that have more computing power than the Tandy; 0 percent of U.S. homes have Internet access. What do the next 20 years hold? Are predictions of tourists in space, holodecks (as in Star Trek: The Next Generation) and biometric identification far-flung or just around the corner? Come hear some of the latest opinions in this special 20th anniversary session. new York Showcase 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm The Best of New York 2008, held earlier this year, honored more than a dozen individuals and programs for outstanding leadership and contributions from New York’s public sector IT community. In this special presentation, you will hear from many of the award winners on their accomplishments and their hard-learned lessons from the front lines of New York public service. Technology Update agility for Changing Times – SOa as a Strategy 10:15 am – 11:30 am The rapid pace of change in today’s world — including change in the marketplace, the supply chain, and governing regulations — affects government and the services governments need to provide to their constituents. In this environment, it is more important than ever that the IT systems can be quickly adapted to new requirements and services. SOA can help. SOA has emerged as the dominant architectural trend for connecting people, information and processes. In this session, you will hear how SOA can be a central strategy for state and federal governments that are looking to increase agility and manage cost. You will learn how SOA, built on supporting technologies such as object orientation and open standards, helps government be more responsive by addressing issues such as code and functional reuse, the cost of development and maintenance, and operational agility and responsiveness. Speaker: anthony Gold, Vice President and General Manager, Open Source Business, Unisys 21st Century Government Managing Your IT Portfolio – Best Practices 10:15 am – 11:30 am This year, like so many years before, public sector budgets are tight, and the focus on effectively managing IT portfolios is sharper than ever. This session will feature proven application management models that have, at their core, best practices that include defined service levels and performance based contracts. The presentation will include a case study from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and its implementation of the EDGAR system (Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval system). This system is part of the core business of the SEC and is central to the functioning of the U.S.’s capital markets.
