Many steps are necessary to ensure proper stewardship of the public’s money. However, some are not. Some steps in the procurement process remain because “that’s the way we’ve always done it”. Join this town hall discussion for an honest and frank conversation about these complexities from officials in the forefront of dealing with the most difficult procurement and purchasing issues in government. The impact of decisions and policies implemented by control agencies reverberate throughout state government. This session place leading government executives “in the hot seat” and give you a chance to question them about the policies that affect you every day. Moderator: Brian Scott, Director, Information Systems and Health Statistics, NYS Department of Health • Early eGovernment Web 2.0 successes (and hiccups): eDemocracy, civic participation, enhanced customer service, and diplomacy are among the emerging applications of “eGov 2.0” around the world During this discussion, you’ll get practical, usable strategies to effectively create Web 2.0 eGovernment services that deliver tangible value to constituents. Greg Schwem will share his hilarious views on technology and today’s business environment. He will share his observations on topics such as technical support lines, monotonous business meetings, acronyms, “frequently” asked questions, e-commerce, cell phone addiction and that annoying guy in every office who always sends two word e-mails! By the end of Greg Schwem’s show, you’ll see how “efficient” tools are actually rendering us inefficient. Greg is featured on XM Radio’s Laugh USA and Sirius’ Laugh Break doing bits about technology and corporate America. The next Generation Workforce 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm Demand for IT talent continues to escalate as retirement is draining IT staffs. At the same time, the pool of qualified candidates seems to be steadily shrinking. How do you attract a new generation of qualified workers? Who are they and what will they demand? What is the best way to train and motivate staff to take on new skills and challenges? This session focuses on the workforce of tomorrow. Technology Update Outstanding Open Source applications in Government 10:15 am – 11:30 am Open source and open standards can be applied to encourage innovation, collaboration, and public engagement. A new breed of software applications, based on open standards and built with open source software, demonstrates how much value government agencies can deliver to the public and to one another when they design their platforms around innovation and collaboration processes. This presentation will survey and analyze some of the best examples from federal, state, and local government agencies. Speaker: Michael Tiemann, Vice President, Open Source Affairs, Red Hat 21st Century Government Independent Validation and Verification 10:15 am – 11:30 am How can you be sure, really sure, that your project will turn out as intended? Independent validation and verification – IV&V – can be a powerful quality assurance tool. The goal of IV&V is to use a completely independent entity to evaluate the work products of a project to ensure the intended outcome meets the formal specifications, and that progress is being made according to plan. It can be thought of as “Project Due Diligence” since it is an investigation of performance and risk based on standards and best practices. This session will provide concrete guidance on the benefits of IV&V and how to structure your IV&V programs to best deliver successful projects. Speaker: John Druke, Partner, KPMG Web 2.0 - Cutting Through the Clutter 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm Web 2.0 is all the buzz. But what does it mean and more importantly, what does it mean to government? In fact, from blogs and wikis to AJAX and RSS, a broad array of services loosely labeled “Web 2.0” are already being used by government. This interactive will help you get beyond the hype and learn the essential elements of any Web 2.0 strategies. Specifically, the session will cover: • What Web 2.0 is (and is not) • The Web 2.0 building blocks • Applying Web 2.0 to government • Social networking technologies that enable meaningful two-way dialogue with constituents Event Info – www.gtceast.com 1 http://www.gtceast.com
