However, despite the current hype and misunderstanding, virtualization offers real advantages, helping governments create an IT infrastructure with the intelligence to react to problems in real time, repurposing servers on demand for situations as disaster recovery, added load, or simply to balance the use of existing resources. This session will offer a working definition of virtualization. It will also give concrete examples of how virtualization can be a cornerstone for a strategy to simplify information technology infrastructure and help make computing platforms more efficient. The presentation will cover the basic elements available today that can help simplify IT infrastructure, and provide a glimpse at technologies on the horizon. Identity Management is an important tool for organizations. Identity management solutions held the potential to resolve many of the pain points around access to the Health and Human Services Commission’s information resources, including agency consolidation and information technology restructuring, changing business models, and new security requirements. But, identity management solutions can also be difficult to implement. This session will review the HHS implementation of identity management, from the initial needs assessment through to implementation. You will hear about both the successes and the problems faced by HHS, and how the team solved the challenges. Steven Bailey, Director, Enterprise Architecture & Security Management, Texas Health & Human Services Commission Jeff Fleece, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Texas Health & Human Services Commission lupita Padilla, Director, Infrastructure Management & Operations, Texas Health & Human Services Commission S9The Future of Mobile Technology Wednesday, January 28 | 3:00 – 4:00 pm Research and development is booming in the wireless arena, exploring such issues as: What are the infrastructures of the future? What new devices, tools and applications have the most potential to impact government operations and services? What about security concerns? This session provides a glimpse at emerging trends and technologies in perhaps the fastest growing segment of technology today. S12 20th Century Applications in the 21st Century: Modernizing Applications Thursday, January 29 | 10:30 – 11:30 am Citizens increasingly expect their governments to provide flexible and adaptive services. Governments are often trying to meet these expectations with monolithic mainframe applications that are based upon outdated and cumbersome programming languages. Yet transforming these applications into systems that are agile and flexible can be a daunting job. This session will explore one approach to modernization. Using source code analysis, cost estimation models and data visualization, organizations develop a strategy for mainframe application modernization. This session will also provide examples of successful projects to illustrate the benefits of this approach to application modernization. Steve Woods, Legacy Modernization Analyst, Hewlett-Packard Company S14 Getting IT Done! Thursday, January 29 | 1:30 – 2:30 pm Several years ago, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission began an effort to fundamentally change how it used technology. The agency used Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) coupled with Business Process Management (BPM) to enable a truly powerful document management and workflow solution for processing Medicaid eligibility. The presentation will highlight the successes in improved client access and case processing efficiency. It will also explain the best practices used, including business process modeling, SOA design patterns and data center architecture. Finally, you will hear about the software development lifecycle and IT governance best practices that made this project exceptionally successful. leah Burton, Director, Enterprise Solutions, Texas Health & Human Services Commission Gary Gumbert, CIO, Texas Health and Human Services Commission Jim Macek, Director, Systems Development, Enterprise Applications, Texas Health & Human Services Commission S6 Converging Security: Policies and Procedures Wednesday, January 28 | 1:30 – 2:30 pm To have a successful security model, organizations need new rules and processes. Most business leaders have come to understand that security is a vital part of their organization. Protecting data, securing systems, and ensuring access and authentication are no longer enough. Physical, logical and cyber security, historically implemented and managed separately, need to converge in response to growing security threats. Security convergence does not just concern the technologies implemented. It is intricately tied to the ways that governments conduct their businesses, and affect processes across the organization. Security convergence is not about one executive assuming this crucial leadership role, but more about the processes that an organization holistically employs to ensure the security of their assets. Join industry experts from the physical, logical and cyber security arenas for a panel discussion on security convergence and how organizations can begin to implement processes that will bring about a stronger security posture. Moderator: Sloan Foster, Vice President of Marketing, HBMG Inc. Panelists: Michael Cation, Founder and Executive Vice President, NOVUS Technology Dan Cunningham, CEO, RAAK Technologies Frank Fayyaz, Network Services Director, HBMG, Inc. Brett Tobey, Intelligent Openings Business Development and Product Manager, ASSA ABLOY S15 With Access Comes Risk Thursday, January 29 | 1:30 – 2:30 pm Many government agencies and departments are starting to dabble in Web 2.0 tools, eager to embrace the promise of wider collaboration and greater connectivity to the community as a way of helping get the business of government done. However, concerns about protecting public assets — both systems and data — have kept others standing on the sidelines. Traditional approaches to data and system protection, such as firewalls and other system defense are not adequate for these new tools. A new data centric approach is needed to adequately protect systems and data. In this session you will hear a pragmatic approach to both the policy and technical controls needed for a data centric security solution. Robert Amezcua, Data Protection Product Line Executive, McAfee Technology Trends S3 Implementing Identity Management — An Enterprise Approach Wednesday, January 28 | 10:30 –11:30 am This presentation will provide a case study that highlights the benefits and challenges of implementing an identity management solution across a distributed architecture in a complex Enterprise environment.
