ERM Annual Review 2008 - (Page 18) “ Handled poorly, remediation can have serious impacts on a company’s reputation or lead to costly litigation.” Greener Cleanup – Sustainable Remediation Continued growth in brownfield redevelopment and the ever-increasing significance of issues such as climate change and sustainable development has seen sustainable remediation emerge on the CSM agenda. Many clients are evaluating the value of sustainable remediation to their businesses. To some this means re-evaluating the necessity of doing remediation in the first place; to others it means giving weighted priority to remediation techniques that have a lower environmental footprint. Recycling of demolition waste and reusable components after closure are becoming key sustainability considerations. We are also seeing organizations factor in a project’s carbon footprint and look at options to limit it as part of the remediation process. For example, the impact of greenhouse gas emissions produced by a fleet of trucks providing soil to restore a remediation site could be minimized if the soil is sourced locally or if biofuel is used. Sharing Innovation and Knowledge Thomas Enterprises Managing remediation activities to significantly reduce costs and maximize development opportunities. Ben Leslie-Bole & Mark Ransom, Walnut Creek CA, US Technical innovation plays an important role in providing solutions for the delivery of CSM services. Sharing new techniques and associated methods of application can provide clients with cheaper and more efficient methods to address contamination costs and liabilities. To complete a particularly challenging project in Germany, ERM utilized its US experience and employed the triad approach to remediate a site that had suffered from contamination issues for a number of years. This was the first time the triad approach had been used in Germany. We are also leveraging the power of our global knowledge sharing platform, Minerva. ERM’s Site Investigation and Remediation community can discuss technical queries, share resources and identify best practice in one location and leverage it in another.
