ERM Annual Review 2008 - (Page 19) Environmental Decommissioning and Demolition When clients close or move a facility, attention is often concentrated on the new site or development plans. To ensure site closure stays on track ERM is frequently being asked by clients to provide turn-key services for decommissioning, demolition and remediation around the world. ERM Remediation & Construction Management (RCM) supplements ERM’s technical resources with contract and construction management expertise. This enables the effective development and implementation of closure and remediation strategies that address environmental issues and ensure regulatory requirements and health and safety standards are met on time and budget. Sediment Remediation In North America, sediment remediation is becoming a major issue for clients. Contamination is often attributable to several companies and unlike Europe, where governments usually coordinate responses, in the US liability rests with the private sector. Recently, the US Environmental Protection Agency reached an agreement with 73 organizations to pay for the completion of a sediment contamination investigation and to determine cleanup approaches for 17 miles of the lower Passaic River in New Jersey. ERM is working with some of these organizations to assist in determining their liability and evaluating the most effective means for remediation and restoration. As such projects progress they will set a precedent for sediment remediation work across the US. Consequently, we expect to see a significant increase in demand for related services over the coming years.
