ERM Annual Review 2008 - (Page 23) “ Organizations constantly need to stay abreast of current and anticipated legislative requirements and the level of activity of regulatory enforcement bodies.” The Sustainability Reporting and Assurance Intersection Sustainability reporting provides a way for organizations to publicly demonstrate to stakeholders how they are meeting their sustainability commitments and as such this can enhance their brand reputation. The scope of a report can cover a broad spectrum of EHS and social issues, but most publish data on their environmental performance and include details on their underlying management systems, supply chain issues and community outreach programs. There is considerable operational value in sustainability reporting. It can highlight potential cost reductions, minimize risk, and assist in identifying new market and product opportunities. ERM currently assists many clients across a range of industry sectors in preparing their sustainability reports including Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Ingersoll Rand Company. Recently, we also assisted China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation create their Sustainable Development Report against requirements of the United Nations Global Compact. Demand for our services is not limited to creating reports. With two thirds of the Global Fortune 500 publishing sustainability reports, we are increasingly undertaking third party reviews for clients, such as 3M and Newmont Mining Corporation. Organizations can benefit from such reviews in a number of ways, from identifying areas for improvement to ensuring stakeholders’ sustainability concerns are addressed. In addition, they also provide an assurance that the reports are accurate and comprehensive. Following the introduction of an internal Environmental Performance Assessment Program (EPAP) by Siam Cement Group (SCG) in 2001, ERM has undertaken assessments of SCG’s operations. Last year, ERM reviewed EHS assurance for its business groups, and evaluated environmental performance and verified EHS data for its 17 subsidiaries. This provided SCG with a clear picture of each of their operations’ performance and data integrity, as well as highlighting opportunities for improvement.
