PALM BEACH DERBY RETURNS TO AGDF
The 2017 season was the first year that the Dressage
Derby was held under the lights, scheduled at the
intermission of the CDI-W Grand Prix Freestyles .
Denmark's Mikala Munter was reserve champion of
the evening, and commented, "It's really difficult to
get on a horse that you've never sat on and ride a test
like that . When they asked me to ride in the Dressage
Derby I was actually really nervous! When I did it the
first time, I rode a Grand Prix test in the Derby of
Hamburg and that was so difficult ."
Munter continued, "We had very nice horses however,
and it's hard enough to ride a Prix St . Georges, so it
was prevalent that we did have good horses . I had a
great time! I ended up riding in the evening and in the
final with Chris Koschel . We all took it very seriously .
This wasn't a joke . It was serious and we went out
there, we watched the horses and saw them prepare . I
think that that is also typical of us riders in Wellington,
we all do support each other and I think that this

Dressage Derby brings out that true camaraderie ."
Each year, the unique Dressage Derby develops a
stronger following . Spectators are fascinated by
the riders' ability to execute such sophisticated
movements on catch rides . However, the technique
is already instilled in each competitor, explained
Von Martels . "Of course, you only have a very
short period of time to ride the horse prior to the
test, but I think that being a competition rider you
certainly know the test and you know your test
riding, whether it's on one of your own horses or
on a Derby-loaned horse . The test is the test, so
everyone has the same opportunity in that regard .
When I participated in the Derby, I took every
opportunity to watch the horse in the warm-up with
its own rider, speak to the rider and get as much
information as possible ." He concluded, "It's a great
event and I think that everyone looks forward to
watching as well as participating ."
