Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum
By Cristina Longo
Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum picked up the reins for the
first time at the age of seven, and has been galloping to
victories all over the world ever since. After a successful
career riding as an American, Michaels-Beerbaum
adopted German citizenship in 1998. She quickly became
a role model for young female equestrians everywhere,
as she was the first woman ever to ride for Germany at
the European Championships in 1999, where the team
went on to earn the Gold medal. She then went on to
become the first woman to ever be ranked number one
in the world for show jumping in 2004. She held this
position again in 2008, where she maintained her ranking
for 11 consecutive months. She has also been named
German Rider of the Year three times, an inspiration to
female competitors at any stage in their career.
Among her numerous career achievements are three
victories in the FEI World Cup™ Show Jumping Final in
2005, 2008, and 2009, all aboard her stellar and now
historic mount Shutterfly. The year 2009 proved to be
a record breaking one for Michaels-Beerbuam, as she

became the first woman to ever win the final three times,
a record that still holds true today. She described the
victory as the "the perfect win," where she and Shutterfly,
aged 16 at the time, won every leg of the competition
on their way to claiming the championship title. The
third time's the charm for Michaels-Beerbaum, who
represented Germany at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and
the 2012 London Olympics, before earning her first medal
at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games. Aboard
Fibonacci 41, she contributed to the Germany's overall
Team Bronze medal. Michaels-Beerbaum was once again,
only woman on the team, and finally earned the Olympic
medal she had been working towards her entire career.
Although Michaels-Beerbaum has had an illustrious
professional career, she notes that one of the biggest
highlights in her life has been the birth of her daughter
Brianne, who is a budding equestrian herself. MichaelsBeerbaum said, "It's been a great joy for us [Markus] and
I to watch her enjoy horses, the thing that we've loved
all our lives. She absolutely is enamored by horses. She
loves every single thing about them and has a deep
understanding of them as animals."
