ROCK CLIMBING: With
in-town locations and spots
within Rocky Mountain
National Park and Roosevelt
National Forest, climbers find
more than 1,200 bouldering,
sport and traditional routes.
An indoor climbing wall
welcomes beginners and those
wanting to practice when
the weather is challenging.
The newest local spot is
downtown behind the
Performance Park stage.
Here, guides take beginners
to learn the basics in an
unintimidating environment,
it is also a great peoplewatching spot. 5.0-5.12D

to take in-while the thin air
at 7,000-plus feet enhances
their overall fitness.

MOUNTAINEERING: More
complicated than hiking,
mountaineering requires skill
and technical gear to reach
the top. In Estes Park, several
summits beckon, but one
stands out-Longs Peak. At
14,259 feet high, it has lured
mountaineers for more than a
century. GRADES I-VI
BACKPACKING: Long-distance,
overnight hikes thread
throughout Rocky Mountain
National Park and Roosevelt
National Forest. Depending
on your route, you may pass
through woodlands or alpine
tundra, beside waterfalls
or across the Continental
Divide. Permits are required
year-round to backpack in
the national park and during

summer in the national
forest. EASY, MODERATE,
CHALLENGING, DIFFICULT
ICE CLIMBING: Look to the
national park for epic ice
climbing adventures for
experienced climbers. A
favorite, Hidden Falls, has
a short approach. Others-
Jaws, The Squid, All Mixed
Up, plus about 20 more-
present longer approaches.
Want to give ice climbing a
try? Local outfitters will safely
show you the ropes (and the
ice picks). CLASS WI2-WI6
MOUNTAIN BIKING: Fans
of the fat tire find boulders
and other technical terrain
on trails outside Rocky
Mountain National Park. The
views are thrilling, and so are
the grades. Pole Hill, just off
U.S. Highway 36, promises
descents that leave riders
breathless and challenged.
