WILDLIFE

golden-mantled
ground squirrel

OFTEN MISTAKEN for a
chipmunk due to its stripes
and chubby frame, these
ground squirrels are a guest
favorite. They ham it up from
rocky outcroppings and low
elevations as they beg for
treats from onlookers. (Please
do not feed them despite
their adorable antics.)

boreal toad
ON THE DECLINE despite
efforts to bolster their
populations, these threeto four-inch-long toads live at
altitudes between 8,000 and
11,500 feet. They can be found
near shallow water, with
breeding taking place in the

WESTERN TERRESTRIAL GARTER SNAKE. IT IS THE ONLY GARTER SNAKE
SPECIES THAT CONSTRICTS ITS PREY.

snowshoe hare
DEPENDING ON THE SEASON
and the necessary camouflage, these rabbits might
be brown or white. Their
snowshoe-like rear paws
carry them easily across the
snow and offer traction to
better escape predators. They
tend to be most active at night
and at dawn when they feed,
often browsing in areas with
dense brush, which also provides defensive cover.

pika
YOU'RE LIKELY TO HEAR their
squeaky "eek" alarms before
seeing these six-inch-long,
hamster-like herbivores.
Thanks to excellent eyesight
and hearing, they know when
danger is afoot. Even after
they've warned other pikas,
you still might spy them

scampering among the rocks.
They are extremely sensitive
to warm temperatures, so
they have become a species of
interest to researchers studying climate change.

summer months.
Unfortunately, a fungus is
taking its toll on the toad's
total numbers, so if you see
one, it's a remarkable
wildlife moment.

yellow-bellied
marmot
LOOK FOR THESE portly
members of the squirrel family
in high-elevation meadows or
while sunning themselves on
rocks. They are most active in
the mornings and evenings
when they feed; otherwise,
they hunker down in their
burrows, which is also where
they hibernate in winter. You
might hear one before you see
it thanks to the sharp whistle
the sentries emit when
perceived danger is near.
