Q& A
Every year at the Estes Park
Farmers Market, folks seek not
only fresh produce and unique
goods, but also answers. Here
are some of the most frequently
asked questions-and answers.
Where can I have a picnic in
Estes Park? Many of the picnic
areas, such as Riverside Plaza,
Tregent Park and Performance
Park lie beside Fall River or Big
Thompson River. Additional
picnic areas dot the Lake
Estes Trail.
What are the best sources for
finding out about specific hikes
in Rocky Mountain National
Park, entrance fees, campfire
programs or backcountry
permits? Some information is
available on page 22, but rangers
at the national park's visitor
centers, listed on page 61, also
can provide details.
What kinds of activities are
available in Estes Park? In addition to the plethora of outdoor
recreation in Rocky Mountain
National Park and Roosevelt
National Forest, guests may rent
watercraft on Lake Estes, enjoy
go-carts and mini-golf in town,
horseback ride, take guided
outings, shop, attend special
events, ride the aerial tram and
more. Visit www.VisitEstesPark.
com/things-to-do for more ideas.
What kind of stores are in Estes
Park? Throughout downtown
and beyond, visitors find businesses specializing in women's
clothing, outdoor apparel, shoes,
candy and sweets, groceries,
antique photographs, books, art,
flowers and more. Visit www.
VisitEstesPark.com/things-todo/shopping for a complete list.
Where can I find out about
events in Estes Park? Turn to
page 95 or visit www.VisitEstes
Park.com/events-calendar to
see a calendar of events.
When is the best time to see
the leaves change? Leaves
generally start changing color
at higher elevations in mid-September, with colors peaking in
the village from late September
through early October.

Where are the best
places to view elk,
bear and moose? Turn
to page 14 for specific
information on Estes
Park's "Big Five" and
"Little Five."

What is that ruin on the hill?
The stone remnants sitting
atop Centennial Open Space at
the Knoll-Willows are that of A.
G. Birch's home, which burned
in December 1907.
What community services are
available? Like other towns
its size, Estes Park has a post
office, a library and a hospital.
Stop by the Estes Park Visitor
Center for more information.
What can my family do on a
rainy day? Although most
days the sun does shine in
Estes Park, there are times of
inclement weather. On those
days, take the fun indoors.
Try slot car racing, indoor rock
climbing, swimming at the
indoor pool, bowling, attending
a movie or going to the arcade.
Or, try some relaxation at
one of the area spas, where
massages, facials, hair care
and body treatments make
you feel refreshed. For something educational, visit the
local museums.
What is the difference
between the rules for the national park versus the national
forest? Generally, because
national parks promote preservation, the rules for the national park are more restrictive
than the rules for the national
forest. For example, you may
take your dog on trails in the
national forest. You also may
use ATVs and snowmobiles in
the national forest. To learn
more, turn to pages 56 and 62.
Is Estes Park actually a park?
No. Estes Park is a welcoming
village at the eastern entrance
to Rocky Mountain National
Park. The "park" in the town's
name comes from a geologic
term describing a valley.
"Estes" recognizes Joel Estes
and his family, the pioneers
credited with first settling
the area.
