Elsa Murano, a distinguished researcher and academic leader, was selected after a nationwide search for candidates to lead the sixth largest school in the nation. Murano is former undersecretary for food safety at the United States Department of Agriculture and former vice chancellor of agriculture of the A&M System. Her work has been extensively published and she has received numerous research grants totaling more than $8.7 million. She will oversee the institution’s annual $1.2 billion budget. JEFF VALDEZ NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF QUEPASA CORPORATION Media Pioneer Jeff Valdez, who has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career in Hispanic media, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of long-standing Internet company QuePasa Corporation (NASDAQ: QPSA). Valdez, who also serves on the boards Maya Entertainment and Si TV, has been recognized as one of the Top 50 marketers in America by Advertising Age and one of the top 10 players in the Hispanic media market by Market Age publication. The National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) selected Valdez to receive the Quasar Award at the 11th Annual NAMIC Visions Awards. In addition, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) awarded him the Outstanding Achievement Award for his founding of Sí TV, which currently is watched in more than 17 million households. HOST CITIES FOR 2010 AND 2011 USHCC ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION AND BUSINESS EXPO SELECTED Dallas and Albuquerque were recently selected by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to host the largest gathering of Hispanic business owners in the country, the USHCC Annual National Convention and Business Expo in 2010 and 2011. The weeklong conventions are expected to contribute about $10 million to the local economy of each city. Dallas was chosen as the 2010 convention site in part because of its large concentration of Hispanic residents and Hispanic-owned companies, according to the USHCC. One-third of Dallas’ population is Hispanic, and there are 55,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in Texas, according to the state census. Albuquerque, which was selected for the 2011 convention, has a population that is reportedly two-thirds Hispanic. According to estimates, there are 30,000 Hispanicowned businesses in New Mexico. This year’s USHCC Convention will be held in Sacramento, California, from September 24 -27. LIBERTY POWER PRESIDENT HONORED BY NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY Alber to Daire, president and chief operating officer of the national electric retailer corporation Liber ty Power, was recognized for business achievements and exemplary leadership by Nor thwood University at its 28th Annual Outstanding Business Leader Awards. Since its founding in 2001, Liber ty Power has grown into the only minorityowned, independent energy retailer with a national presence. Liber ty Power is currently serving customers in ten markets. 56 Online media and entertainment company Batanga recently announced the acquisition of HispanoClick, a leading online Hispanic advertising network reaching over 5.6 million U.S. unique users per month, according to a Batanga proprietary comScore report. HispanoClick’s network works with more than 800 Hispanic publishers with a roster of clients that has included Verizon Wireless, Kraft, Mazola, the U.S. Army, Western Union, Air France, and Bancomer. HispanoClick will reside under the Batanga umbrella. Marc Duquette will continue to serve as General Manager and Ana Maria De La Cruz, co-founder of HispanoClick, will continue as vice president of business development based out of Batanga’s headquarters in Miami.
