A recent study by the Pew Hispanic Center, which paints a statistical portrait of the nearly 14.5 million Hispanic women in the United States, shows that not only are there significant differences between Hispanic women and their non-Hispanic counterparts. There is also a wide divergence in demographic, employment, education and income characteristics between native-born and immigrant Hispanic women, as well as between Hispanic women from different bir th countries. The study, based on U.S. Census data, indicates that the experience of Hispanic women in the United States may be largely affected by whether they were immigrants or born in the U.S. to Hispanic parents. Approximately 48 percent of all Hispanic women in the U.S. were either born here or born abroad to a parent who is a U.S. citizen, while 52 percent were born in countries other than the U.S, the figures show. In most statistical reports both groups are lumped into one category, although their experiences may be quite different. When considering statistics that relate to Hispanic women, it is helpful to keep in mind most Hispanic immigrant women are relatively new arrivals. More than half arrived in the U.S. since 1990. Only 20 percent of immigrant Hispanic women arrived in the U.S. before 1980. The figures appear to imply that immigrants who came to the U.S. for economic reasons are succeeding in improving the standing of the second generation and beyond, although nativeborn Hispanic women still lag somewhat behind non-Hispanic women in most key areas. Language use is generally considered an important factor in measuring the as- AGE DISTRIBUTION OF ADULT WOMEN, 2007 (%) Age (in years) 85+ 80 to 84 75 to 79 70 to 74 65 to 69 60 to 64 55 to 59 50 to 54 45 to 49 40 to 44 35 to 39 30 to 34 25 to 29 18 to 24 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 Percent Source: Pew Hispanic Center tabulations of the 2007 Current Population Survey (NBER MORG data file).
