Although more than half of the women reported that they speak only English at home or speak it very well, most of these English speakers were born in the U.S. In fact, nearly 90 percent of the U.S.-born Hispanic women reported that they are very conversant in English. In contrast, 73 percent of immigrant Hispanic women reported that they did not speak English at home or did not speak it very well. The analysis showed native-born Hispanic women earn significantly more than immigrant Hispanic women. Among Hispanic women who are employed full-time, the median weekly earnings of the native born were 35 percent greater than those of immigrant Hispanic women, $540 versus $400. The median weekly pay for non-Hispanic women was $615. Native-born Hispanic women are also more likely than immigrant Hispanic women to be employed, either full-time or part-time. Six in 10 (61 percent) native-born Hispanic women are employed as compared with five in 10 (51 percent) immigrant Hispanic women. Among Hispanic women, the majority of the native born are members of the middle and upper income groups (55 percent) while the majority of immigrants, or 61 percent, are members of the lower income group. TOPLINE FINDINGS * HISPANIC WOMEN are more likely than non-Hispanic women to be employed in BLUE-COLLAR OCCUPATIONS such as building, grounds cleaning and maintenance (10 PERCENT VERSUS 2 PERCENT); food preparation and serving related jobs (9 PERCENT VERSUS 6 PERCENT); production (8 PERCENT VERSUS 4 PERCENT); and personal care and service occupations (7 PERCENT VERSUS 5 PERCENT). * Immigrant Hispanic women are represented to a much larger degree than native-born Hispanic women in agricultural, manufacturing and SERVICE-ORIENTED INDUSTRIES. Immigrants make up two-thirds or more of the Hispanic women who work in agriculture, manufacturing; personal and laundry services, private household services; restaurant and lodging services industries. * Immigrant Hispanic women are more likely than native born Hispanic women to have less than a high school education. Nearly half (49 PERCENT) of all Hispanic women immigrants have not completed high school, compared with 22 PERCENT of the native born. * Native-born Hispanic women are nearly twice as likely as immigrant Hispanic women to have some college education. While 46 PERCENT of native-born Hispanic women have at least some COLLEGE EDUCATION, only 24 PERCENT of immigrant Hispanic women do. * While only 13 percent of nonHispanic women are uninsured, almost half (47 PERCENT) of immigrant Hispanic women and a quarter (25 PERCENT) of nativeborn Hispanic women lack health insurance.
