By Ruben Navarrette, Jr. AMERICANS a new study on assimilation from the Manhattan Institute. Authored by Duke University Professor Jacob Vigdor, the index measured three kinds of assimilation: economic (employment, education, homeownership etc); cultural (intermarriage, English proficiency, family size, etc.); and civic (citizenship rates, military service, political participation, etc). Then it compared the assimilation rates of recent immigrants to one another by country of origin, and to the immigrants of the early 1900s. For instance, immigrants from Vietnam, Cuba, and the Philippines have the highest rates of assimilation in every category. Canadians and Indians are among the least likely to engage in civic assimilation because many don’t become U.S. citizens, even if they live in this country for many years.
