The immigration issue is “divisive in the Republican base, it’s divisive in the Democratic base, it’s divisive in the business community. It splits organized labor, it splits the immigration community.” —R. Bruce Josten, lobbyist, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as quoted by Associated Press. “A small-business owner who only has a single business line faces much more volatility and risk. If that one product line becomes obsolete, it’s going to be harder for the business owner to compete.” —David Hsu, entrepreneurship professor, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, as quoted by The New York Times. “Anything that the [US] can do to increase the number of Latin American students who study at U.S. universities is going to be very positive.” —Jeffrey Puryear, vice president for social policy, InterAmerican Dialogue in Washington D.C. as quoted by The Christian Science Monitor. What’s the best way for a new entrepreneur to build a business—mining or fishing? Some cast their nets wide to see how many new clients they can haul in, but for Maria Perez, owner of a New York promotional products company, the most successful approach has been mining clients and contacts with whom she already has relationships. After gaining experience working for another company, Perez, still in her 20s, decided to go into business for herself. She got in touch with Adventures in Advertising (AIA), a nationwide network of franchised and affiliated promotional-product distributorships. Independently owned and operated but aided by AIA, Perez’s Adventures in Advertising/New Dimensions develops strategic marketing and promotional solutions for businesses of all sizes. Among other things, it provides a vast range of promotional products from T-shirts, caps and sportswear to trophies, jewelry, mugs, golf balls, calculators—and just about anything you can get a client’s name on. Adventures in Advertising Sales Director Mike Erwin doesn’t mind admitting he’s impressed. “Unlike many companies that depend on new clients to increase sales,” he says, “Maria is growing by working more closely with her current customers. It’s really paid off for her and we encourage our other franchisees to follow in Maria’s footsteps.” Yes, Perez says, there’s nothing like existing clients— people who know you and trust you, and introduce you to friends who also have businesses—for boosting that old bottom line.
