Hispanic Enterprise - October/November 2007 - (Page 6) EDITOR’S LOG Women have certainly been in the spotlight 2007. On the country’s political stage, it is the first time a woman has ever had a serious shot at the Oval Office. Within the Hispanic business community, women have demonstrated a growing presence on corporate boards and in executive positions. In addition, recent research has revealed that the number of Latina-owned businesses is growing faster than any other business segment. For this reason, I was not surprised that the finalists for the 2007 Hispanic Enterprise Best in Business award were mostly women. The winner, Rosa Sugrañes is a Spanish woman who, tile by tile, has grown a small business into an international interest. Most importantly, Sugrañes is one of the most charismatic and active members of the Miami business community. Her involvement in a variety of organizations and community projects make us very pleased to recognize her as this year’s Best in Business. The Hispana Leadership Summit, our annual event for Latinas, shines another positive spotlight on Hispanic women. Some of the most accomplished Hispanic businesswomen attended, eager to share insights and advice with up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Our event coverage gives readers a glimpse some of the summit’s highlights (p. 44. Also in this issue, we profile Juventino Cano (p. 18), a board member of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, who built Cano Container Corp. out of sheer determination and hard work. Another great example of someone passionate for business is Nelson Albareda, president of Eventus Marketing (p. 38), the firm responsible for staging street parties as a prelude to this month’s Latin Grammy Awards. In our usual sections, Julie Stav tells you how to protect your intellectual property, and Sandra McElwaine provides new insights on facts and figures relating to Hispanics from the associate director of research at the Pew Hispanic Center.
