Hispanic Enterprise - December 2007/January 2008 - (Page 15) THE POWERFUL GET A NEW EDITOR As the new editor of the U.S. and Miami editions of PODER, Daniel Eilemberg will reach a Latino über elite of executives, entrepreneurs and leaders in all fields. rom Bogota to London to Hollywood and now Miami, Daniel Eilemberg, 29, has traveled a fast track to his new appointment as editor of the prestigious business publication PODER. He has his work cut out for him. PODER’s in-depth reporting and exclusive insider access has won it a hemispheric audience of top-tier decision-makers. Fortunately Eilemberg’s background displays the breadth and restless creativity that Isaac Lee, PODER’s editor in chief, sees as “a great addition to PODER’s exceptional editorial team.” Born and raised in Bogota, Eilemberg moved on to the University of Westminster in London where he was expected, Britishstyle, to churn out “many essays and papers,” he says. It was the perfect boot camp for an emerging writer. After earning a bachelor’s degree in film and television production, Eilemberg hopped a flight to Hollywood, where he landed a job in the MGM creative department lining up writers, directors, castings, set designers and generally helping put together projects for the movie giant. But the writing bug had bitten, so in spare moments he dashed off stories primarily for Hispanic publications in the U.S. HISPANIC ENTERPRISE F “I enjoyed it,” he says, but soon came to criticize a viewpoint in many magazines DOSSIER Name: Daniel Eilemberg Age: 29 Position: Editor, PODER, U.S. and Miami editions Publication: PODER Magazine Total circulation: 150,000 U.S. Circulation: 50,000 Editions: U.S., Miami, Colombia, Mexico, Chile (launches 2008) Previous experience: Editor, Hispanic Magazine; Executive Editor, LOFT Magazine; Creative, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Education: University of Westminster, London (B.A., Film and Production) Country of origin: Colombia Marital status: Single Outreach: Pays healthcare and education for two Colombian children through Child Reach Quote: “Films are still a big passion, maybe I’ll get to produce an Indie some day.” that he terms “advocacy journalism.” When it came to Latino companies, products, personalities or politicians, reports seemed to indicate that all were absolutely ideal. Eilemberg was convinced readers would profit more from “balanced journalism”— in other words, the truth, warts and all. The publishers of LOFT Magazine in Miami soon took notice of Eilemberg’s skill and talent and brought him from Los Angeles to Miami as executive editor. “It was mostly execution,” Eilemberg says, but he proved a quick study and was on the job when the magazine wa awarded the prestigious Eddie Gold Award for Best Lifestyle Publication at the FOLIO awards. He came into his own as the editor of Hispanic Magazine, which had been taken over by Mexico’s Televisa Group. To expand readership he went after the coveted 18- to 24-year-old demographic by shaking up the design, “pushing the website” and seeking to make the content “younger, hipper, cooler,” he says. Just one year saw a 100 percent growth in Hispanic’s 18-to-24 readership and a 40 percent growth overall. Eilemberg’s lightning success won him the prestige slot for any Latino editor. “PODER is always growing,” he says of his recent posting. In fact, two of the editions, in Miami and Chile, are brand new. 15 December/January 2008
