Air France Holidays 2008 - (Page 7) the eternAl Allure oF pAris It’s the most visited destination in the world—a city of lights and romance, high cuisine and high art, a simple baguette with cheese. Below are a few suggestions to start you on your way Must-do Monuments One of the most recognized monuments in the world, the Eiffel Tower, attracts more than 6 million visitors each year. The views from uppermost platforms are best an hour before sunset. Visiting Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe should also top your list. The Tomb of the unknown Soldier beneath the Arch honors those killed during WWI, and the eternal flame honors those killed in both World Wars. Right Bank Versus Left Bank? The Right Bank falls north of the Seine River— home to the Champs-Elysées, the Louvre, and the aristocratic neighborhood of the 16th district. The Left Bank, south of the Seine and cradle of the Sorbonne, is considered the center of intellectual and artistic life. Must-see Museums Originally a royal palace, the Louvre now houses such legendary works as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory. Spend some time in the Jardin des Tuileries just outside the museum. The second-most important museum in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay, is a work of art itself. The transformed railroad station holds an impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionistic paintings. Île-de-la-Cité: The Birthplace of Paris The birthplace of Paris and the site of its most significant church—the Cathédrale Notre-Dame— Île-de-la-Cité has become a kind of pilgrimage site. Cross the footbridge to Île-St.-Louis to stroll its charming residential neighborhood. Walks to Take Paris is, above all, a pedestrian city. St.-Germaindes-Prés in the Latin Quarter is lined with famous cafés where intellectuals still meet to discuss the issues of the day. Continue to Montparnasse, once home to expatriate literati such as Ernest Hemingway. Trek up the hill in Montmartre, also an artist’s haunt, past the Moulin Rouge, and to the Sacré-Coeur. You will be rewarded with wonderful views. Finally, be sure to take the most famous walk of all along the Champs-Elysées. www.air franceholidays.com 800.237.2623 http://www.airfranceholidays.com
