Welcome to Good Natured Fairfield California - (Page 8) Downtown Art goes public in Fairfield Fitting an entire city—its history, its people, its special essence—onto one wall is no easy task. But that’s what Lee Wilder Snider had to do. The Benicia artist was chosen to design and paint Fairfield’s first public mural on the side of Pepperbelly’s Comedy & Variety Theatre in the heart of downtown. The mural was commissioned by the City of Fairfield, the Fairfield-Suisun Rotary Club, the Fairfield Downtown Association, Fairfield Visual Arts Association and the Cultural Arts Awareness Program. Snider met with a committee to decide what would go into the mural. Capt. Robert H. Waterman, Fairfield’s founder, would definitely get some space, as would Chief Francisco Solano. A Vietnam War-era medical evacuation plane would represent Travis Air Force Base, and two figures would depict the region’s immigrant farmworkers. The plane would be front and center, having landed smack in the middle of a representation of old downtown Fairfield. Its wings would shelter more figures strolling along the boulevard. A variety of people were also included in the mural’s creation. Local volunteers—artists, schoolchildren, journalists and residents—helped Snider complete her masterpiece. The mural stands, after all, as a community project. —Dustin Driver, excerpt from Celebrates, Jan./Feb. 2006 Artists work day and night to complete the first of several murals that will grace Fairfield’s downtown. The mural below can be viewed at any time on the side of Pepperbelly’s Comedy & Variety Theatre on the corner of Jackson and Texas. 8 Fairfield Hotel Association Photo: Dustin Driver
