M ED I A The Native American YouTube Online effort promotes video culture sharing By rob Capriccioso MILLIONS OF WEB SURFERS already turn to the popular Internet site YouTube to share personal videos on almost any topic imaginable. No doubt, it’s a great service, but because the YouTube experience is so individualized, it’s often difficult for users to become part of communities of video creators and viewers who have similar interests. For the growing group of American Indian video makers who want to network with each other and view great Native content, the mainstream site leaves much to be desired. Enter Native American Tube. The idea, created by Mya Littleboy Rubio (Cree) and her husband Jerry Geronimo Rubio (Apache) in early 2008, has quickly become a new hub on the net for Indians to not only post their videos, but to chat about them and to share their history and culture with other Internet users. “Creative videos are really starting to pour in,” said Mya. “People are just learning about us — we’d love to have more tribes and Indians getting their video content out there.” Anyone can view and post videos on the channel. Users can also become members of the channel, which allows them to network and chat with their online buddies about videos they enjoy. Already over 4,000 videos have been posted in such categories as drummers, musicians, humor, animations and news. Mya, who is originally from the Horse Lake First Nation Reserve in Canada, said she was quite surprised to learn that there are no Native-focused television channels in the United States.
