American Indian Report - June 2008 - (Page 16) ART The Pottery Project A Virtual Glimpse into the Past By Lee Allen THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION of Southwest Indian pottery, 20,000 whole vessels at the Arizona State Museum in Tucson, will soon be available electronically from a three-dimensional, interactive virtual vault. The most comprehensively documented collection anywhere on the globe is called simply “The Pottery Project,” and it grows bigger on a daily basis because ASM, the largest anthropology museum in the Southwest, is the official repository for archaeological objects uncovered as a result of urban expansion on public lands. One of the most exciting features of the exhibit, aside from actual whole pot samples that date back as far as 50-150 A.D., will be the ability to view them in virtual fashion, accessing pieces of viewer choice, electronically lifting them off the shelf and rotating them while enjoying a demonstration of how the piece was made and a curator discussion of its cultural significance. Collections Curator Diane Dittemore said, “The museum can’t allow visitation into the real storage vault that stays at a constant temperature and humidity. So, this is an excellent way for us to share the wealth.” Currently, some 100 vessels have been digitized for showing on a closed-circuit basis, but, with almost 20,000 to go, it will be some time before all can be accessed Annie Manuel demonstrates pottery making techniques at the May 10th opening of The Pottery Project at Arizona State Museum.
