It will be globally-accessible and intellectually and visually stimulating.” At the core of the virtual vault project is Doug Gann, preservation archaeologist at the Center for Desert Archaeology, who uses profile modeling to digitize three-dimensional objects — photography rather than laser scans. Gann calls the nexus of techniques “revolutionary” in creating a simulated past world where virtual explorers can view pottery and artifacts in situ. “This prototype project finally unlocks this potential,” Gann “This visual database will convey a wealth of interpretive and contextual information not delivered by traditional exhibits. It will be globally-accessible and intellectually and visually stimulating.” said. “We work with imaginative pieces of artistic expression, some every bit as important as any work by Rembrandt or Picasso, but we have had a tendency to render the past in stale books or static displays.
