American Indian Report - June 2008 - (Page 26) BOARD MEMBERS B r i E f i n g TRIBAL GOVERNMENT Strategic Planning: Step 1 — An Assessment of Now By James B. Floyd, Ph.D. AN ASSESSMENT OF NOW brings together the critical information necessary to start a strategic planning process. The assessment has five elements: a review of the past, a determination of the scope of the assessment, an assessment of current conditions, a statement of findings and an assessment report. In this issue, we present an approach for conducting a detailed assessment. Next month, a less detailed approach will be presented for those cases in which a complete assessment may not be possible. Our intent is to present alternatives for strategic planning that can be tailored to fit different requirements. To assist in consideration of options, we have included links to background resources, such as publications, helpful Web sites and relevant classes. As always, your feedback, questions, and comments are requested.
