Conducted by the National Indian Justice Center, this year’s conference features workshops on an array of topics, including financial literacy; storytelling; basket-weaving; foster care (Title 1V-E); spirituality, sacred sites and repatriation; dealing with and stopping crime; and creating and enhancing cultural programs. Applications are due for HUD Indian Community Development Block Grant Program funding. Approximately $58.04 million is available in FY 2008. Applications are due for Native American Public Telecommunications Public Television Program Fund grants. Projects must be intended for national public television broadcast, but they can be in any phase of production, from research and development to completion. Awards range from $10,000 to $25,000 for research and development and up to $100,000 for production or completion. The U.S. Department of Energy provides its Regional Renewable Energy Development Workshop for Southwest tribes in Albuquerque, N.M. The workshop focuses on renewable energy development opportunities available to tribes in the region. It was designed to explore strategic energy planning and energy options to meet tribes’ long-term energy goals. Specifically, it covers renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency concepts; renewable energy project development; organization and legal framework for development; and financing options. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center offers its Family Archaeology Adventures, an opportunity for families to work next to museum archaeologists excavating an historical site on the tribe’s southeast Connecticut reservation. Participants get to search for ancient artifacts and learn to analyze what they dig up. The Association of American Indian Physicians’ 2008 Annual Conference is held in Worley, Idaho. Titled “Listen! The Eagles Are Calling: Our Native Youth Cry Out For Healing,” attendees will focus on examining the root causes of the issues that Native youth face. Applications are due for the Tribal Management Grant Program, a national competitive discretionary grant program established to assist tribes and tribal organizations assume all or part of existing IHS programs, services, functions and activities through a Title I contract and to assist established Title I contractors and Title V compactors to further develop and improve their management capability. An estimated $2.5 million will be available in fiscal year FY 2009, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 per year.
