the South Avenue B Wal-Mart, Cibola High School, Yuma Regional Medical Center, the Cocopah Casino, the City of Somerton and the West Reservation. The route is open to the public, but tribal members get to ride for free as long as they show a tribal ID card. Beginning in 2005, the Cocopah has operated the YCAT Gray Route, which cover’s the tribe’s East and West Reservations. This spring, the Nez Perce Tribe in Idaho launched a bus service using a $250,000 Tribal Transit grant. Called Appaloosa Express Transit, it provides service to Lenore, Orofino, Kamiah, Kooskia, Culdesac, Sweetwater, Lapwai, and Lewiston, including the Clearwater River and Itse’ Ye Ye casinos. It connects with Valley Regional Transit at the Lewiston Community Center, where riders can connect to buses bound for Lewiston, Clarkson, Asotin and Moscow. The fare is $20 per month ($15 per month for seniors) or $2 for a day pass. Appaloosa Express also offers an on-demand service to members who need transportation for medical reasons. In FY 2008, $12 million is available for Tribal Transit Program grants. The number and size of the awards will be determined through a competitive process; however, planning grants are limited to $25,000 per applicant. No cost-sharing or match is required with this program.
