American Indian Report - July 2008 - (Page 22) EN V I R O N M EN T Isolated Village Tackles Unique Environmental Issues By Kimberly Hayes By establishing an active Environmental Committee and reaching out to others with environmental expertise to address its unique environmental needs, the Native Village of Port Lions exemplifies diverse and innovative tribal practices, according to an Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Interior Department report. The village, located on Kodiak Island off Alaska, is among 14 tribes recognized in the report Tribal Successes: Protecting the Environment and Natural Resources. The report said that although tribes face common barriers in environmental management, they can be overcome through innovative practices, like collaboration and partnerships, education and outreach and expanding resources. The Native Village of Port Lions has 425 enrolled members. With no connecting roads to the rest of Kodiak Island, the village can only reached by boat or small aircraft. Governed by a traditional tribal council, it has developed a comprehensive community plan reflecting its commitment to a “beautiful healthy clean environment and a traditional way of life while encouraging progress” and to safeguard public health. The council also established an environmental office. The village’s goal is to involve the community in both developing and achieving community goals, including reducing, reusing and recycling waste materials. A solid waste management master plan was adopted, and a village environmental committee was formed, which has strong working relationships with city government and the Kodiak Island Borough.
