American Indian Report - July 2008 - (Page 29) BOARD MEMBERS B r i E f i n g TRIBAL GOVERNMENT Strategic Planning: A Shorter Assessment Process By James B. Floyd, Ph.D. In the last issue, we presented a detailed process for conducting an Assessment of Now, the first step in strategic planning. In this issue, we are looking at a less detailed process for those situations in which a comprehensive assessment is not possible, such as when there is a lack of sufficient resources to conduct a detailed assessment or not enough time for an in-depth evaluation. The elements will be the same as before, but the approach will be less detailed. The five elements are a review of the past, a determination of the scope of the assessment, an assessment of current conditions, a statement of findings and an assessment report. In next month’s issue, we will present the second step in strategic planning — preparing a vision for the future — which will be followed by articles on developing a method for measuring progress in achieving the vision, preparing a strategy for getting there and implementation of the strategy. As always, your feedback, questions and comments are welcome.
