A half century before Jackie Robinson officially integrated Major League Baseball in 1947, Louis Sockalexis of the Penobscot Nation quietly slipped onto the roster of the Cleveland Spiders. Though his presence in the major leagues did not receive the same attention as that of Robinson’s celebrated stint with the Brooklyn Dodgers, it may be said that Sockalexis and many other Native Americans who have played in the major leagues since the turn of the 20th Century were trailblazers for Robinson and other African-Americans to breakthrough later on. Their story is the centerpiece of an exhibit at the “Baseball’s League of Nations: A Tribute to Native American Baseball Players” exhibit gallery. Iroquois Indian Museum in Howes Cave, N.Y. Photos courtesy of Iroquois Indian Museum The exhibit, “Baseball League of Nations: A Tribute to Native American Baseball Players,” chronicles the tribulations and triumphs of dozens of Native of dozens of Native Americans who played Major League Baseball. From its use as a tool of assimilation in governassimilation in government-run boarding schools through the extensive list of Native Americans who played for Americans who played for major league teams, the exhibit attempts to present a balanced view of the sport’s history the sport’s history with American Indians. players featured, The exhibit runs until Dec. 31.
