American Indian Report - August 2008 - (Page 21) • Consulted other agencies to restore water table and natural hydrology of Clark’s Creek and improve wetland and fish habitat; • Collaborated with the Humboldt Area Foundation to develop inventory of traditional use plants and build a garden to propagate native plants for regenerating degraded areas; • Reintroduced traditional use plants, elderberry and bear grass, and tribal members watered native plants by hand and fashioned wire cages to protect against wildlife browsing. The rancheria was able to reclaim about a quarter of the ranch purchase price by placing a portion of the property into a 30-year conservation easement under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wetland Reserve program. Easement requires that habitat for wetland, migratory birds and at-risk species are the primary use of the land. It is also working to increase knowledge about cultural sites on public land among land management agencies. To improve understanding and cooperation, the rancheria’s EPD conducts informal monthly meetings with local representatives from the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service, and the tribal chair meets quarterly with these two agencies. n For more information, contact: Tim Keasey, Susanville Indian Rancheria, (530) 251-5623.
