American Indian Report - August 2008 - (Page 24) FI L M Native Eyes Film Showcase Entices Youth into Media By Lee Allen The show won’t go on until November — and that’s good because the marquee is still being debated. The fifth annual Native Eyes Film Showcase, jointly sponsored by the Arizona State Museum, the University of Arizona Hanson Film Institute and the National Museum of the American Indian, should center loosely around a theme of “the urban Indian experience.” And if tradition is repeated, it will be similar to the 2007 event, which included two feature-length documentaries and three short films from a collection at the Smithsonian Institution’s Film and Video Center at the National Museum of the American Indian. “Whatever we finally settle on, Native Eyes will always include films made by or about Native peoples,” said Lisa Falk, Showcase co-founder. “It is our mission to introduce people to Native ways of looking at life, getting young filmmakers involved and offering a forum for their work.” This year’s program included an intensive, sixday summer workshop for teenage talent from the nearby Tohono o’odham Reservation, emphasizing media literacy and production experience with a focus on visual storytelling. over a dozen 13- to 18-year-olds “now see film and video production as an accessible means of both personal and cultural expression,” said Vicky Westover, program director for Hanson Film Institute. “We exist to serve diverse, underrepresented and new voices in media making.” “As Native people, we are charged with the responsibility of instilling in our youth the validity of our ways in the modern world.
