The schedule of events includes the Best of Show Awards Ceremony (Aug. 22), the SWAIA Auction Gala (Aug. 23), the Native Cinema Tony Bonanno Photography Showcase (Aug. 23/24), a joint project with the National Museum of the American Indian, and, of course, the Santa Fe Indian Market (Aug. 23/24). The event attracts around 100,000, so, if you want to attend, plan ahead. Applications are due for 2009 Tribal Wildlife Program grants, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Funding can be used to develop and implement programs for the benefit of wildlife and their habitats, including species of Native American cultural or traditional importance and species that are not hunted or fished. The award maximum is $200,000, and no match is required. Presentations will be delivered by a variety of speakers, such as Mark Groat of the GSA Disaster Recovery Purchasing Program, and Viola Riebe, a Hoh tribal elder. sEpT. 29-OcT. 1 Indian Country tourism professionals gather at the Coeur D’Alene Casino Resort in Worley, Idaho, for the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association’s 10th annual conference. This year’s event features a series of mobile workshops, including a pre-conference Scenic Byway Mobile Workshop. Conference details and an online registration form are available at AIANTA’s Web site. Tribal leaders convene in Phoenix, Ariz., for the National Congress of American Indians’ 65th Annual Convention and Trade Show. This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Kevin Gover, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. The convention will kick off with the 2008 NCAI Golf Tournament.
