Her efforts resulted in a change in the law that greatly lessened the chance of a traditional Native person in Arizona from being turned away at the polls for a lack of identification. 14 Water Rights — A Long, Hard Battle Well Worth Fighting By Michelle Tirado Despite a series of laws and case law that have reserved tribes’ rights to their fair share of water, far less than half of them have actually secured their rights. But with the cost and time involved with fighting for these rights in court or through settlements, it’s not surprising. As the nation’s population grows and droughts continue to plague so many areas of the country, the demand for water will increase. So, waiting could mean a tougher and costlier battle.
