American Indian Report - August 2008 - (Page 6) Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Country Notes from Diamondbacks Program Adds Summer Sparkle for Native Youth Nearly 1,000 Native youth and their families attended the 10th Annual Arizona Diamondbacks Inter-Tribal Youth Baseball Tournament and the inaugural Native American Baseball Invitation held in early July. In partnership with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the NABI Foundation, the D-backs are the only Major League Baseball team to host an all-Native American baseball or softball tournament. The Inter-Tribal Youth Baseball Tournament is a Native American friendship tournament, which offers a junior division for ages 9-12 and a senior division for ages 13-16. Tournament play took place at various “Diamonds Back” Fields in Phoenix and on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation. Following the success of the NABI Basketball Invitational, the NABI Foundation and the D-backs partnered to create a similar event to feature the top Native American high school athletes in both baseball and softball. The NABI Foundation’s mission is to use sports as a tool to create opportunities for higher education and teach positive life skills to Native American youth. Though the mountain itself is a National Historic Landmark managed by the state, some of the parcels adjacent to the mountain have been sold to developers. Now, the sacred mountain overlooks two drag racing strips, a convenience store and a biker bar. Hoping to protect the land from further developments, the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association has passed a resolution asking the state and Mead County to help prevent other commercial developments near the site.
