American Indian Report - August 2008 - (Page 7) Project Venture Gets a Financial Boost More than 350 Native students from across New Mexico are participating in Project Venture, sponsored by the National Indian Youth Leadership Project. The program provides in-school, afterschool, weekend and summer activities, including outdoor adventures, service learning and leadership development. The NIYLP was recently awarded t wo grants — $250,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and $1.5 million over two years from the Atlantic Philanthropies. The grants will allow the program to expand into more schools in New Mexico and to bring the program to eastern Arizona and oklahoma schools. Photo courtesy of the National Indian Youth Leadership Project Sunrise Ceremony Started American Indian Month A sunrise ceremony sponsored by the University of Minnesota kicked off the state’s American Indian Month this past May. About 20 people attended the ceremony, sponsored by the Council of American Indian Elders, a group of elders from five tribes in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Kansas. other events scheduled for May included a powwow, parade, chili feed and job fairs.
