American Indian Report - August 2008 - (Page 8) Billboards across Indian Country are encouraging American Indians and Alaska Natives to lose weight, be more active and cut calories in order to prevent Type 2 diabetes. The billboards were inspired by the National Diabetes Education Program’s Small Steps, Big Rewards initiative, which is the country’s first comprehensive campaign to help stem the diabetes epidemic by promoting Billboards Promote Diabetes Prevention the prevention message. The billboards can be customized with local images, telephone numbers or logos. They are also encouraging organizations to use the artwork to create bumper stickers, banners and other promotional material. National Championship 5K Winners Announced Ian Ruybalid and Mary Jo Zunic were crowned the overall male and female finishers at the first annual Native American 5K National Championships. The event attracted more than 100 participants representing Ian Ruybalid (the winner) at about the 2 19 tribes and 10 different mile mark leading the race. Photo courtesy of Mike Daney states. The event coincided with the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in April.
